As a new homeschooling family, diving into the Charlotte Mason method can be both exciting and overwhelming. There are many different homeschooling methods out there so be sure to choose the one that you feel is a good fit for your family’s learning style. For help choosing a homeschool method, visit this post.
This gentle approach to education emphasizes a love of learning and a deep connection with nature, literature, and the arts. If you’re looking to embrace Charlotte Mason’s philosophy, here are ten invaluable resources to get you started:
- Charlotte Mason Study Guide by Penny Gardner – This guide offers a comprehensive resource for understanding and implementing Charlotte Mason’s educational philosophy. I find that it really emphasizes the importance of cultivating a love for learning through the use of living books, nature study, and outdoor experiences. With practical tips, lesson plan ideas, and a focus on fostering a child’s natural curiosity, this guide serves as an invaluable tool for both new and experienced educators seeking to create a nurturing and enriching learning environment. This was introduced to me by a fellow co-op mom and I have found it to be incredibly helpful.
- Ambleside Online – A free curriculum that reflects Charlotte Mason’s philosophy, offering a wealth of literature, lesson plans, and resources for all grade levels. If you are looking to dip your toes in the water without spending much money upfront, this may be a great option for you.
- Laying Down the Rails – A comprehensive guide based on Charlotte Mason’s educational philosophy, this handbook focuses on habit training. It outlines the importance of developing good habits for a well-rounded character and offers practical advice and strategies for parents and educators. The book emphasizes that fostering virtuous habits can lead to a fulfilling and disciplined life, guiding children in cultivating virtues such as attention, order, and responsibility. With insightful anecdotes and suggestions, it serves as a valuable resource for anyone looking to implement Mason’s methods in their parenting or teaching practices.
- The Commonplace Podcast by Autumn Kern – A thought-provoking podcast that I enjoy listening to while in the kitchen. She explores the intersection of everyday life and deep philosophical questions. Autumn engages with various guests to discuss personal experiences, cultural phenomena, and societal issues, encouraging listeners to reflect on their own lives and beliefs.
- The Alveary – While not a free curriculum, this one does offer many different resources and support for the mother teacher. What I love about the Alveary is the modern book choices that still remain true to Charlotte Mason’s teachings. However, my favorite thing about the Alveary may be the integrated digital planning tool. (It’s worth looking into!)
- Charlotte Mason’s Original Writings – Here, you can explore her writings and teachings through collections available online or printed, which offer an authentic perspective on her philosophy. These aren’t always easy to read which is where I personally find Penny Gardner’s study to be helpful.
- Charlotte Mason Institute – The Charlotte Mason Institute (CMI) is an organization dedicated to the educational philosophy and practices of Charlotte Mason, emphasizing a holistic, child-centered approach to education. It provides resources, training, and support for educators and parents who seek to implement Mason’s methods, which focus on fostering a love of learning through rich literature, nature study, and creativity. CMI also promotes the understanding of Mason’s principles through conferences, workshops, and publications.
- Charlotte Mason Motherhood Blog by Larissa – Her blog is dedicated to the philosophy and practices of Charlotte Mason, focusing on holistic education, nurturing childhood, and practical motherhood tips. She shares resources, insights, and personal anecdotes that highlight the importance of nature, literature, and family in fostering a rich learning environment.
- Nature Study: A Guide for Beginners – This guide helps families incorporate nature study into their curricula, helping children develop an appreciation for the outdoors.
- Local Charlotte Mason Support Groups/Co-Op – Connecting with other homeschooling families can provide support, ideas, and camaraderie on your homeschooling journey. *My favorite local co-op is A Sacred Education!* I may be a little biased here since there aren’t many Charlotte Mason resources in our area and we call A Sacred Education our co-op home!
By utilizing these resources, new homeschooling families can foster an enriching and fulfilling learning experience rooted in the Charlotte Mason philosophy. Happy homeschooling!
